2020: A Look-Back

2020: A Look-Back

Most people will probably look back at 2020 with disbelief, or maybe even horror. What with all that happened in the Philippines, no one expected the sudden turn of events.

Remembering the First Quarter

The year started like any other year, all around the world. The standout January memory for the Philippines was the Taal volcanic eruption last January 12, 2020. And, of course, the shortage of face masks everywhere. The scarcity of face masks continued till the middle of the year because of the pandemic.

In the middle of February, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the COVID-19 outbreak is a “very grave threat”. Then, on March 11, 2020, WHO declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic. It was all downhill from there.

The SPECS Memories

Everything was a blur for most people. The standout memories will be unemployment, lockdown, where to buy food (if one has the money), and where to get food (for those without). But for SPECS Foundation, it was a dark year filled with a lot of sunshine. They went about their usual activities for different programs, but with all passion and determination of a group who wants to help more people.

SPECS reached out to many barangays and communities to help the people get through the pandemic. Notwithstanding, we were also able to help our suffering brothers and sisters affected by typhoons and fire incidents. Regular schedules of different programs continued. With all these, we only have one word to describe our 2020: GRATITUDE.

*(Note that the first case of COVID-19 was reported on December 31, 2019, and the source of the outbreak was linked to a wet market in Wuhan, China.)

SPECS was started in 1986 by a group of Christian workers who saw the hunger, and risks the children were exposed to. They undertook the management and delivery of the different services and care for the poor families in the various communities in Pasay City. In 1987, it was registered with the Securities & Exchange Commission as a non-profit, non-stock, non-government organization. In 2002, SPECS built a home for boys and girls in Pasay City.
